PR Blunders

There are tons of mistakes that we make every single day. When you’re a PR person, your life is consumed with emails, meetings, chugging down lattes, events and so much more that we often overlook things. So, from our team to yours, here are some crucial mistakes to avoid by taking that extra second and preventing putting your foot in your mouth.

  • Jumping the gun. We have an immediate reaction to the media, our clients, etc. and respond without thinking. Take time to read and digest everything before responding.
  • “Forgetting” to proofread. It’s plain lazy and lacks professionalism. Double check everything that has your name on it, including all emails, press releases, and anything which includes the “To…” address.
  • “Forgetting” to research. Research EVERYTHING. Going to speak to a reporter or a client and not having all the facts/information is a waste of time for both parties. Again it makes you look unprepared and can burn bridges. Familiarize yourself with their work and current projects. It’s crucial to your work!
  • Not taking a break or not eating. From time to time you need to get away from your work. Get up and stretch your legs, refill your coffee mug, etc. Most importantly, you need a lunch break AWAY from your computer. I know it’s hard and you have hundreds of things that need to be done before you go home, but it’s important. Those moments when you’re exhausted or just “hangry” is a sign it’s time to stop and eat. Occasionally we forget, but if it becomes a habit, try helpful aids like setting an alarm or have your coworker remind you, and while you’re at it, check Instagram or call a friend!

So before you send that email or call that reporter, make sure everything is in order. The clock’s ticking and no one has time for a careless mistakes. Get out there and show everyone you’re a season pro.
