On your busiest days, you do everything to keep up with time. One minute it’s 11am and the next it’s 6pm and your taking work home with you. Usually the culprit for time lost is wedged between one of your tabs (we’re talking about you Facebook, Twitter and YouTube). If you really have tasks to finish and are racing against the clock, look out for these PR offenders:
Co-Workers/ Email Overload – If you keep getting distracted with small talk reach for the headphones in your bag. It’s a subtle “I’m busy” and allows you to focus on what’s at hand. When email chains becomes 5 or 6 emails deep just pick up the phone. You’ll explain yourself faster, clearer and save time. Just remember to breath first before calling them.
Procrastination – You’re given a task and assume it will be done in record time only to realize you’ve been working on it for three hours and still aren’t done. Maybe all the bathroom breaks and texts weren’t worth it. Here’s the rule. Start the task-if you find yourself moving fast keep up the pace. Afterwards take a 5 minute break, it’s well deserved.
FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) – No one wants to admit that he/she has a problem, but you do. Checking your phone, social media platforms, and your favorite websites gets you through the day. Most of all it feeds your soul and the need of communication. However, there’s a job at hand. Close the tabs and resist the urge to send that Snapchat to your friend; unless they’re paying your bills of course.
“Multitasking” – No one multitasks efficiently. If you have a large project or an approaching deadline; close everything else distracting you from real work. You can’t do two things at once no matter how hard your try.
Whether the culprit is one or all of them listed above, it’s time to get real with yourself and get down to business. Remember there’s always someone looking to take your spot. Remind everyone and yourself the skills and the results that got you here.
Best of luck, and remember the clock is ticking.
